A Language Fact?

Some people think it’s sexist to refer to all humans as men, or mankind.
I’ve read that the word, woman, was derived from the word, wif, (pronounced like wife,) but I find that unlikely.
Somewhere I read that the word, woman, was originally wombman or a man with a womb.
If ‘man’ is generic for human beings, that possible derivation makes sense, and I like to think it’s correct.
Of course that doesn’t give us a specific word for male humans, and I prefer not to discuss possible words for those.
